Sizing and Fit
1. What size quartz banger do I need?
Measure the inside diameter of your rig's joint. Roughly 14mm across means a 14mm banger. Roughly 18mm means 18mm. A 10mm joint is smaller again and less common on newer rigs.

2. Male or female, how do I tell?
Look at your rig's joint. If the joint is a hole that something slots into, it is female, and you need a male banger. If the joint sticks out and things slide over it, it is male, and you need a female banger.
They always pair opposite. Two males will not connect, and neither will two females.
3. Should I get 45 or 90 degrees?
Match the angle to your rig. Bent neck rigs almost always take a 45 degree banger. Straight tube rigs usually take 90 degrees.
The quick check is to look at your rig from the side and see whether the joint tilts away from the body or sits level with it. Get this wrong and the banger sits at an odd angle, which puts steady strain on the joint.
4. Will any banger fit any dab rig?
No. Three things have to match: size, gender and angle. All three, not two of three.

Types of Banger
5. What is the difference between a bucket banger and a terp slurper?
A bucket banger is the standard shape. Flat bottom, straight walls, and it works with any carb cap.
A terp slurper has a dish at the bottom and slits that draw air upward through it. That vacuum pulls concentrate through instead of letting it pool in the neck, so you waste less. Slurpers need their own style of cap and usually a marble set.
6. What does a thermochromic banger do?
It changes colour as it heats and cools, so you can see the temperature rather than guessing at it.
It does not make your dabs better on its own, but it removes the timing guesswork that ruins most dabs. Worth it while you are still learning when to drop.
7. Is quartz better than titanium?
They win on different things. Quartz gives cleaner flavour and will not put a metallic taste in your vapour. Titanium holds heat longer and will not break if you drop it.
Most people who care about taste use quartz and accept they will replace one eventually. If your setup gets moved around or shared a lot, titanium survives better.
8. Is quartz better than a glass banger?
Yes, and this one is not close. Glass cracks under repeated torching and holds heat poorly. Quartz handles the temperature swings that dabbing puts it through.

9. Are cheap quartz bangers any good?
Some are. What matters is wall thickness and whether it is genuine quartz rather than glass sold as quartz.
A thin cheap banger heats fast and cools before you finish, which is the main thing separating a good one from a bad one at any price. We go through what to check in our post on whether cheap quartz bangers are worth it.
Heating and Timing
10. How long should I heat a quartz banger?
Heat until it just starts to glow, then stop. Timing varies with wall thickness and how many jets your torch runs, so there is no single number that works for everyone.

11. How long should I let it cool before dabbing?
Around 30 to 60 seconds for a standard banger, longer for thick quartz. If your concentrate sizzles hard and disappears instantly, you went too early.
Low temperature dabs give better flavour, high temperature gives bigger clouds and harsher vapour. Our post on high temp versus low temp dabs covers the trade.
12. Why do my dabs taste burnt?
You are dropping onto a banger that is still too hot. Burnt taste means you scorched the concentrate rather than vaporising it.
Wait longer before you drop. If you are consistently impatient, a thermochromic banger takes the guesswork out.
13. Do I need a torch, or will a lighter work?
You need a torch. A normal lighter will not bring quartz anywhere near dabbing temperature, no matter how long you hold it there.

14. Can I use an e-nail instead of a torch?
Yes. An e-nail heats the banger electrically and holds a set temperature, which removes the timing problem entirely.
What you give up is portability and simplicity, plus there is a coil that eventually needs replacing. Our guide on using an e-nail for dabbing covers the setup.
Carb Caps and Terp Pearls
15. Do I need a carb cap?
Yes, if you want the dab to work properly. A cap restricts airflow, which lowers the pressure inside the banger and lets your concentrate vaporise at a lower temperature.
Without one, a lot of what you heated escapes before you inhale it. Our post on which carb cap your banger needs covers the three main types.
16. What size carb cap fits my banger?
Cap size is measured against the outer diameter of your banger opening, not the joint size. That mix-up is why most caps do not seal.

17. What do terp pearls actually do?
They spin inside the banger when you draw, which keeps concentrate moving across the hot surface instead of sitting in one spot and burning.

Chazzing and Cleaning
18. What is chazzing?
That cloudy white haze on the inside of the bucket. It is carbon and residue baked into the surface of the quartz, and it is not sitting on top of it.
Chazzing comes from overheating and from leaving residue to bake in between dabs. Our guide on what a chazzed banger is covers prevention.
19. Can I fix a chazzed banger?
Light chazzing sometimes comes back with a long isopropyl soak. Heavy chazzing does not, because it is etched into the quartz rather than sitting on the surface.
If it stays cloudy after a proper soak, that is a replacement. Continuing to use it affects flavour on every dab.
20. How do I clean a quartz banger?
Swab the bucket with a cotton bud while it is still warm after every dab. That one habit prevents most chazzing and takes ten seconds.

21. Should I season a new banger?
Plenty of people do, and it does no harm. Rinse it, then run a couple of gentle heat cycles before your first dab rather than taking it straight to full glow.
Be aware the benefit is debated. What definitely does prevent chazzing is not overheating and swabbing after every dab, so put your effort there rather than into the seasoning ritual.
Problems and Replacement
22. Why does my banger cool down so fast?
Wall thickness, usually. Thin quartz heats quickly and loses heat just as quickly, so it drops below vaporising temperature before you finish.

23. Why does concentrate run down the neck?
You dropped it onto a banger that was too hot, or you loaded too much at once. Hot oil thins out and runs before the cap goes on.
Let it cool longer, use smaller dabs, and cap immediately. Terp pearls also help keep the oil moving across the floor instead of escaping.
24. How long does a quartz banger last?
With good habits, months of daily use. Without them, weeks.
Swabbing after every dab is the difference. Replace it when it stays cloudy after a proper clean, or if the bucket chips or cracks.
25. My banger cracked. Was it faulty?
Usually not. Quartz cracks from sudden temperature change, so dropping cold concentrate onto a glowing banger, or running cold water over a hot one, will do it.
