A chazzed banger is a quartz banger gone cloudy, white or black inside, that will not clean back to clear. The haze is carbon, cooked into the quartz by heat.
It happens for one reason. Oil left in the bucket gets hit with a torch instead of wiped out. Do that a few times and the carbon bonds to the surface.
Catch it early and an isopropyl and salt soak usually lifts it. Let it etch in and it is permanent, and the banger is on its way out.
Preventing it costs you about ten seconds. Swab the bucket while the quartz is still warm after every dab, and stop dabbing hot enough to scorch the oil in the first place.
What Actually Causes a Banger to Chazz?
Heat plus leftover oil. That is the whole mechanism.
When you dab too hot, a little of the concentrate scorches instead of vaporizing and sticks to the bucket. On its own that wipes away. The damage happens on the next heat, when a jet flame hits that residue and turns it into hard carbon bonded to the quartz.
The worst version of this is deliberate. Plenty of people see a dark bucket and torch it until the residue burns off. It looks like it works. What it actually does is strip the polished top layer of the quartz, leaving a rough surface that grabs carbon faster than the old one did.
So the pipe gets dirtier quicker, you torch it harder, and the cycle tightens. That is how a banger goes from a few brown spots to a white etched bucket in a month.
How Chazzing Ruins Your Session
Two things go wrong, and you notice both.
Heat stops spreading evenly. A rough, carbon-loaded surface builds hot and cold spots, so part of your dab scorches while part of it sits unvaporized in the corner.
And the flavor goes. You bought concentrate for the terpenes, and a chazzed bucket burns off a good share of them before they reach you. Hits get harsher at the same temperature you were happy with last month.
Can You Fix a Chazzed Banger?
Depends how far it has gone, and it is worth checking before you replace anything.
Light chazzing is discoloration sitting on the surface. Brown or grey patches, quartz still smooth to the eye. This usually comes off. Soak the banger in high-strength isopropyl, add coarse salt, and shake it in a sealed bag. Repeat the cycle two or three times, rinse with hot tap water and dry it fully. Heavy chazzing is white, etched and rough. The carbon is in the quartz rather than on it. No soak reaches that, and the banger is also weaker than it was. Replace it.
Two things not to do. Never torch it clean, for the reason above. And never put a hot banger into cold water or a cold banger into boiling water, because thermal shock will crack quartz.
The Best Ways to Prevent Chazzing
Swab after every dab. That single habit does more than everything else combined. Wipe the bucket with a cotton swab while the quartz is still warm, not hot, and add a few drops of isopropyl if the residue is sticky. Warm residue lifts. Cold residue does not.

Is it safe to smoke out of a chazzed banger?
It will not hurt you, but it is a worse experience in every way. Uneven heat, harsher hits, and noticeably less flavor. Heavily chazzed quartz is also structurally weaker than it was, so it is more likely to crack on you.
Does chazzing happen to titanium or ceramic nails?
Both discolor, differently. Ceramic stains and can hold it permanently. Titanium takes heat better than quartz does and rarely etches, but carbon still builds up on it and needs the same wiping routine. Quartz stays the pick for flavor, which is why it is the one worth protecting.
