Hand Pipe Basics
1. What is a hand pipe and how does it work?
A hand pipe is the simplest smoking device there is. You pack dry herb into the bowl, light it, and inhale through the mouthpiece. No water, no downstem, no assembly.
Most have a small hole on the side called a carb that you cover and release to control airflow. There is no water filtration, so the smoke arrives hot and undiluted. That is the trade you make for something that fits in a pocket. Our handmade glass hand pipes show the range of shapes available.
2. What is the difference between a spoon pipe, a chillum and a one-hitter?
A spoon pipe is the classic shape, with a rounded bowl at one end and a carb on the side. A chillum is a straight tube with no carb, packed at one end and inhaled from the other. A one-hitter is a narrow chillum sized for a single pull.
Spoons hold more and give you airflow control. Chillums and one-hitters are about discretion and portion size.
3. What is the carb hole for and how do I use it?
The carb is the small hole on the side of the bowl, and it controls airflow. Cover it with your thumb while you light and inhale, which pulls smoke into the pipe and holds it there.
Release it near the end of your pull and fresh air clears the chamber. If you never cover the carb, air takes the easy route through the hole instead of through your bowl and the pipe barely draws.
4. How do I pack a hand pipe properly?
Grind first. Even consistency is the difference between a bowl that burns steadily and one that goes out every thirty seconds, and a decent grinder makes more difference here than the pipe itself.
Put a slightly coarser piece at the bottom so nothing pulls through, then fill the rest loosely. Take a dry pull before you light it. If it feels like drinking a milkshake through a straw, it is packed too tight.

5. Should I buy a glass or silicone hand pipe?
Glass gives you cleaner flavour and it is easier to see when it needs cleaning. Silicone survives being dropped, sat on, or thrown in a bag, which is why it wins for travel and festivals.

6. Is silicone safe to smoke from?
Food-grade silicone is stable well above the temperature your bowl reaches. What matters is where the flame touches.

7. What makes a hand pipe good quality?
Check the thickness at the joint between the bowl and the stem, because that is where pipes break. Look for bubbles or warping in the glass, which usually mean rushed work.

Screens, Cleaning and Problems
8. Do I need a screen in my hand pipe?
You need one if the hole at the bottom of your bowl is wide enough to pull herb through, which is common on larger bowls. A screen stops that and keeps ash out of your mouth.
Glass screens last longer than cheap metal mesh and do not affect taste. If your bowl hole is small and you pack a coarser piece at the bottom, you can usually go without. Our guide on how to use pipe screens covers fitting them.
9. How do I clean a hand pipe?
Isopropyl alcohol at 90 percent or higher, plus coarse salt. Put the pipe in a sealable bag with both, shake it, and let it sit. Pipe cleaners get the stem.
Rinse thoroughly with warm water and dry it fully before using it again. Never pour boiling water over glass, because the sudden temperature change cracks it. Full method in our guide on how to clean a hand pipe. Silicone prefers hot soapy water to alcohol.
10. Why does my hand pipe keep clogging?
Almost always resin in the stem. Hand pipes have a short, narrow airway and no water to catch anything, so resin builds faster than in a bong.
Run a pipe cleaner through, and soak it if that does not work. Packing too finely also contributes, since powder-fine herb pulls straight into the airway. A coarser grind and a screen fixes most repeat clogging.
11. Why does my pipe taste harsh or bad?
Three usual causes. The pipe is dirty and you are tasting old resin, which is by far the most common. You are holding the flame on too long and scorching rather than lighting. Or you are burning the whole bowl at once, so later pulls draw through spent ash.
Light only a small edge of the bowl, pull gently, and clean more often than you think you need to. Some people also switch to hemp wick to avoid tasting butane.

12. Is a hand pipe harsher than a bong or bubbler?
Yes, and there is no way around it. Water cools smoke and catches particulate, and a hand pipe has neither.

13. Can I use a hand pipe for wax or concentrates?
A standard dry herb pipe is not built for it. Concentrates need more heat than a lighter on glass provides, and the sticky reclaim clogs a narrow stem quickly.
